View the scanned copy of the birth record here. This is where my search could have ended, because I didn't have the parents name. But fortunately our family has her bible from when she was 8 years old. That helped a lot because in the bible she has written that she received the bible in 1834 on July the first when she moved from the Big Orphanage in Stockholm to her foster parents Johan Petter Sandberg and wife M. Regina Nordberg in Delsbo, Hälsingland. View Scanned copy of Bible here. So now I had one more place to look and see if I could find any more information about her and maybe get to know who her parents were. So I went to the Stockholm City Archive to have a look in the Big Orphanages archives, and this is what I was able to find there. First I looked in The Big Orphanage 1833, older children (Micro card E5C:36) and I found her as child no: 114. It says: First written on the top of the
page: "The Girl, Nicolina Josephina is accepted to the Orphanage on Sept.
25, 1833 "No: 114" Then this letter follows: "Honourable Sir Governor I humbly request for my future
accomodation and poorly situation. Nature has made me weak and sickly, not
able to work - as the enclosed doctors certificate shows. Anna Christina Grönbeck Living in the house 10th. on Styrmansgatan, Ladugårdslandet no: 8, September 25th. 1833" View Scanned copy of this document here. After this letter follows many testimonials and here is a transcript of them: "The undersigned affirm that the applicant is not capable of providing for herself and her 8 year old child. She fears God and the Law. Help her if you can. J. D Pastré
"The maid Anna Stina Grönbäck
will be admitted due to incurable illness at the Providers house, reports to
have her daughter, Nicolina Josephina Christina born the 11th. of August
1825, admitted to Prince Oscars School or to the Big Orphanage. On behalf of the Direction Joh. A. Erling
N. Salén
"The Maid Anna Stina Grönbeäck who is currently living with me , at house 11h. Block Hafvsfrun, Ladugårdslandet Parish has a small infant is sick in reumatism and is useless to serve others. She therefore humbly asks for a Doctors certificate. I here by testify that her circumstances are true. Stockholm November 8th. 1825 Then on the same paper is written very messy: "The womanperson Anna Stina Grönbäck is contract in both hands and therefore useless in maidservice. P. Almstedt and: "The help A.S. Grönbäck is
uncurable.
Then follows some unreadable notes from 1831. View them here. Then comes a birth certificate: "Nicolina Josephina Christina,
born on August 11th and Christened on the 15th. of August 1825. Stockholm August 15th 1825 Carl Dahlgren From Josephinas bible I know that she was placed in a foster home so then I took a look in the Big Orphanage books - children outside the Orphanage (Micro card D2H-31) in the year of 1834. No: 4844 July 21st. 1934 Vaccinated Yearly alimony: 20 No: 16, Maid / Mother A. S. Grönbeck. Taken cared of Shop keeper and farmer Johan peter Sandberg in Heby, Delsbo Parish in Gävleborgs county." I know that Anna Stina was admitted to the Providers Hospital in Hedvig Eleonora Parish because I have the protocol from the Provider Direction. I have tried to find more
information about her stay at the hospital, but unfortunately there are NO
records preserved from this time. As you see I also have no trace of who might be Josephinas father. The years Josephina was in a
foster home is not known to me yet. Also in the year of 1848 on June 24th. Josephina marries the 24 year old Carl Magnus Lindfors born on November 14th. 1823 in Söderhamns Parish, Hälsingland. I have found them in the Marriege records for Hedvig Eleonora Parish (EIA:5 Micro card 4 out of 5.) as couple number 21, and it tells me that the wedding actually took place in Torsåker. It say's that Carl Magnus lived in Torsåker and Josephina still lives at Styrmansgatan 36. However, I looked at the Marriege records in Torsåker and I couldn't find them there. I also know from Josephinas bible that after they married in 1848 they must have lived in Hudiksvall for some time - still haven't found them in any records. But from the Parish
catechetical meeting record from Hanebo parish (Micro card: AI:12A 2/5)
1845-1850, Page 84, Here the family is listed as followed: Coppersmith C.M. Lindfors b.
1823 in Söderhamn Son: Carl Mauritz b. 1849 in Torsåker Son: Per Victor b. 1859 in Hanebo Moved from Hudiksvall in 1850" The family stays on in Hallen,
Hanebo Parish until 1890. Between the years 1881 and 1887 all of Josephina and Carl Magnus sons emigrated to America. Only one daughter stayed and married here in Sweden that was Josephina Margaretha Lindfors, and she had a very short life. She passed away only 19 years old in Söderhamns hospital of gastric ulcer. In the year of 1890 on June the 6th, Josephina and Carl Magnus went to the minister in Hanebo parish and received their moving certificate, and emigrated to America. I haven't been able to find them on Ellis Island so that indicates that they went via another port. After arriving in America they settled down in Fosston, Minnesota, where their sons Mathias Leonard and Johan Elias had claims side by side. Carl Magnus passed away in the year of 1900, so he lived in America for 10 year. Josephina lived 19 years in America before passing away in 1909. I don't know anything about how their lives turned out to be after the emigration. I wish I had contact with anyone who might know. I would love to know if they got to learn English or if they managed anyway. I suspect they both helped their sons a lot. If anyone have heard any stories from relatives about Carl Magnus and Josephina I would love to hear about it.
